Do I need to do anything special or extra to use the Carmelite Digital Library with Lion?

This blog entry is directed to those who are using the Mac instead of a Windows PC.  There has been a lot of buzz from Apple about the new version of the Mac OS X operating system called Lion (version 10.7) and it was released “into the wild” a few days ago (Wednesday July 20, 2011).

This blog will answer the question: Do I need to do anything special or extra to use the Carmelite Digital Library with Lion?

The answer is that the CDL runs on Lion and the only special thing you might need to do is push a button.

We did some preliminary testing on the Lion operating system before it was released and were satisfied that there were no significant issues using the new operating system.  Just a couple of days ago I upgraded my Snow Leopard machine to Lion (paying the $29.99 and waiting for the approximate 4 gigabyte download).  The upgrade went smoothly and required little or no interaction on my part.  After the mandatory reboot I fired up the CDL and was greeted by a dialog asking if I wanted to download Java.  I said yes, waited for the download and the automatic install to complete, and up came the CDL without me having to do anything else.   As one would expect I could continue using the CDL as before.  My preferences, book list, etc. were all brought forward and nothing was lost.  All is well.

If you have other programs that require the Java runtime environment to function you might not see the prompt when using CDL as the prerequisites would have already been installed in which case you wouldn’t even see the prompt.
